My Monkey

My Karate Monkey frame is in. The picture is of the frame with the wheels I'd built a while ago. It is, as you can see, sans components. I placed the component order today. I suppose the build will be complete in a few weeks.

I'll do a run-down of the components and post pictures when this is complete. This is will be a hardtail, singlespeed mountain bike.

Update Of Sorts

So, how was you X-moose? Did you get everything you wanted? I didn’t. I received the proverbial coal in the stocking. Telle est la vie.

I think I’d mentioned my Karate Monkey frame is in. If not, well, there you go. I’ve got a local bike shop tracking down some components. I originally thought Hammer Schmidt. Karate Monkey frames are not compatible so this is going single speed, hardtail. I’ll provide the full low-down, with pictures, when this is complete.

While visiting relatives this past weekend I was alerted the family reunion in Canada is on. I’ve a notion to drive my parents there such that I can get in an unsupported, multi-day bike excursion. This would amount to riding Banff National park north to south.

The winter blues are not going away. I seem to be carrying around a general feeling of anger. Not at anyone specific, just in general. The good news regarding this is my gym workouts have been going exceedingly well. The bad news is I only have one (1) disk left of Twin Peaks.

There’s action coming up soon –ish. The Spoke-n-Sport New Year’s Day ride is fast approaching. January is the month to get a dude’s entry in to the Almanzo 100 or Royal 162. I’ve been toying with the idea of putting my name in the hat for the Leadville 100 with the Highway 212 Gut Check as a back-up race. We’ll see. This coming summer is going to be full of trail building. Maybe I’ll intentionally leave my calendar open for last minute decisions regarding bike stuff.

What A Difference

What a difference a week can make. Things are not as dire as they seemed last week. The sun is shining on the proverbial me.

I've had occasion to start looking into the crystal ball that is 2011. For those of you following along at home, yes there will be much singletrack to dig in 2011. However, all dig and no ride make for a cranky Snakebite.

Lo and behold there are many events/ride to choose from. In an effort to inflict even more suffering, the already great Almanzo 100 (mostly all) gravel road bike race now has an add on. The Royal 160. One-hundred-sixty (160) miles of gravel glory. Calendar marked.

Other events and ideas are being tossed around. I'm looking forward to many good things in the future. Not everything will be easy or peachy. But, life is what you make it and I'm going to make the most of it.

Week End Or Weak End

Well cats and kitties, the weekend is nearly upon us. Where does the time go?

I shall spend the weekend leading a bike club ride, exerting as much as I can in the gym, and maybe starting my X-Moose shopping.

The bike ride - FAB Coffee and Donut ride. I guess I'm leading tomorrow. All hands on deck at 8:00 AM at the O'Gorman High School parking lot.

My insomnia is at its height right now. Crap swirling around between my ears will not let me get any rest. I'm hoping some extended workouts in the gym will help with this.

Well, if you didn't get anything from me last year for X-Moose, don't expect anything this year. I will avoid The Maul at all costs. But, there are some other places I can visit and knock some off my list. No, I'm not getting everyone (anyone for that matter) Wal-Mart gift cards.

Visitor

There I was, minding my own business, when – wham! The email arrived. Buckshot was coming to town.

Buckshot is a fellow Almanzo 100 alum. He needed to be in town for business. He sent a shout to see if I’d be interested in meeting and having a beer. He had my attention at “beer.”

It’s fun to put a face with a name and / or a blog. It sounds like he might be this way again over the next few months. He’s got a project farther north in the state. I tuned him into some singletrack in that area as well.

Timely

Just when The Darkness seemed the darkest, I received a timely email or two (2). The emails came from my BFF (stands for Best Fucking Friend) who resides in Orlando.

I met the dude while serving my undergraduate sentence at South Dakota State University. He and I were in the Karate Club together and moved up the ranks together. Many o’ Tuesday and Thursday nights as well as Saturday mornings and countless on the road tournaments and seminars were sweated out together.

In addition, we shared an affinity for weight lifting. He got me started and I’ve been addicted ever since. I don’t remember if he came up with the Mad Dog 20/20 workout or someone else – it wasn’t me – but it was killer. And, when I call it the Mad Dog 20/20 workout, I’m not talking about the wino wine consumed by both of us in the college days of yore so often spoke about in literature. No, this was bad-ass workout shit.

The Mad Dog 20/20 is a leg workout. It was suggested twenty (20) sets of some leg exercises with twenty (20) reps per set. He switched up the exercises. I stuck with just squats. The D.O.M.S. (delay onset muscle soreness) it created was, well, substantial.

In my squats only workout I’d stretch and then put a forty-five pound (lbs) plate on each side of the bar making a total of one-hundred-thirty-five pounds (135 lbs). Then I’d get under the bar and commenced with the set. These were not some half-assed, half way down squats. These were ass to your heals and back up, repeat twenty (20) times, squats.

After the first set I thought it felt too easy and was tempted to put more weight on the bar. I’m glad I didn’t. With each progressive set the lactic acid would build and burn sooner and sooner. By the last two (2) sets the burn started on rep one (1) and my quads were screaming by rep twenty (20).

The next day a dude would feel a little sore but on days two (2) and three (3) a dude would be waddling around. Sitting down and getting up were major productions. It was great!

But, I digress….. While I have been, and continue to be, in The Darkness, my buddy’s email was timely. In mine to him I mentioned I was in week two (2) of being back in the gym after a lengthy layoff and I’d mentioned how I’d almost forgotten how much I liked what dead lifts can provide as a workout. He fired back with an insane dead lift workout he’d JUST completed.

This, in turn, jogged my memory to some pretty sadistic workouts I’ve been a part of. To me, there’s nothing much better to distract a dude then a little self punishment in form of a self inflicted killer workout.

I’ll not push getting my strength back. It will take some time and I’m right on schedule. While I’m handling this my small but active mind will make mental notes on some evil workouts I’ll punish myself with. Perhaps the punishment will help to shake The Darkness away. If nothing else they will make winter go by a bit quicker and whip my ass into shape.

Darkness

The darkness seems to be upon me. It's dark when I get my ass out of bed and it's dark when I come home from work. I'm finding it harder to embrace the winter this year. Maybe that will change sometime soon.

This seems to be the screwed up part of the season when it's cold out but not enough snow to shoe or ski. The saving grace is being able to go to the gym on a regular basis now. My shoulder has not been an issue at all. It's been a LONG time since I've been to the gym regularly. I know the strength will be back in a few weeks.

Giving myself something to do I figure out seeing if I can get larger while making the number on the scale get smaller. A combination of diet and exercise should do the trick. Due to The Darkness I'm in desperate need of something to focus on. For the time being, this will be it. If I didn't know better, I'd say it was SAD.

Despite the crap, I'm glad to be back in the gym. I'm looking forward to some winter sports. I'm also looking forward to spring. We'll be back digging in the park and there will be some trips to some mountain bike festivals as well.

Now What?

It seems things have really gone down the shitter since Thanksgiving. Weirdness and weather - the two (2) killer double-ewes.

This past weekend Falls Area SingleTrack (FAST) conducted and open house of sorts where we walked interested parties through the trail that’s been built coupling that with some light garbage pickup. Attendance was strong.

Just prior to the walk through I conducted a ride through. This revealed a few areas that are going to need some tweaking. The start of the trail in the woods needs corner work. The trail seems too tight. The good news is I know how to fix it. The bad news is trail digging is done for the season with frost and snow and this is going to eat at me all winter.

Speaking of winter, I now find myself in “finding something to do” mode. My shoulder malady is now not an issue. This allows me to get back to the gym. This has proven very welcome. It’s good to have a release mechanism for pent-up energies.
